Paths of the People:
The Ojibwe in the Chippewa Valley

Anishinabe, Saulteur, Ojibwe, Chippewa -- all names of a people who have
lived in the Chippewa Valley of Wisconsin for the past three centuries.
Ojibwe oral tradition speaks of life as a circular path, with parents passing
on knowledge to children and grandchildren. Over the past 300 years,
contact with Europeans and settlement by Americans have forced them
to adapt in order to survive. The challenges each generation has faced--
whether at treaty grounds, boarding schools, or boat landings--have influenced
what knowledge has been passed down, what paths taken.

Out of the Northwoods:
The Many Lives of Paul Bunyan

Michael Edmonds

Everyone has heard tall tales about the lumberjack hero Paul Bunyan and his big blue ox,
but Michael Edmonds tells the true tale behind Bunyan's origins in the
Wisconsin northwoods. It includes eyewitness accounts of how the first
Bunyan stories were shared on frigid winter nights around logging camp
stoves in the Wisconsin pinery. It describes where the tales began, how they moved
out of the forest and into print, and why publication changed them forever.

Reminisence Speaker Series | Stout Historical Association
Noon to 1 p.m. at UW-Stout's Memorial Student Center, Maple/Oak Rooms

The Reminiscence Speaker Series features talks that illuminate the “spirit of Stout.” The original series was held in advance of the university's centennial in 1991 and made a significant contribution to Stout’s oral history. The institution has seen considerable change in the years since and the association reinstated the series to continue documenting the university’s unique culture and history. The talks are free and open to the public. Bring a lunch for an interesting hour highlighting the university’s rich history.
