GrandsPlace
(Formerly GrandsRUs)
Presently over 3.7 million children in the United States live with grandparents. Over
one-third (1.4 million) of these kids do so without their own parents living with them.* Countless
other grandparents and other concerned relatives are dealing with situations in which they wish
their grandchildren lived in safer, healthier environments.
We are those grandparents and other relatives. We are a generation of older people between the
ages of 40 and 80 who are deeply involved, in a non-traditional way, with our grandchildren, nieces
and nephews. Due to different situations in our lives, this challenge has been presented to us and
we have accepted it; some happily, some reluctantly, some because we felt we had to. At a time in
our lives when we expected to be leading very different lives we find ourselves enmeshed in
diapers, PTA, Little League, Girl Scouts, not to mention the court system, social services
departments, mental health professional, special education services, and health care battles.
